Mediterranean diet and cognitive decline: what role for omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids?

چکیده
Cognitive decline is amajor threat to the quality of life of older persons. In the absence of efficient medical treatment, several potential paths for prevention are currently investigated, among which diet raises increasing interest. Higher adherence to a Mediterraneantype diet is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular mortality (Sofi et al., 2008), coronary heart disease (Buckland et al., 2009), and overweight (Beunza et al., 2010) which are wellknown risk factors of cognitive decline and dementia (Fotuhi et al., 2009). Accordingly, several observational studies have also evidenced a link between adherence to a Mediterranean diet and better cognitive performances (Feart et al., 2010). The aim of this paper is to summarize these findings and to examine whether these protective effects might be mediated by polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 series (n-3 PUFA).

Nutrition and Behaviour: The Role of 3 Fatty Acids
This review article gathers evidence on the potential relationship between dietary intake of 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids ( 3 PUFAs) and mental function. Several pieces of evidence that 3 PUFAs influence affective and cognitive function are presented. Although published data and results available in the field remain limited and sometimes ambiguous, they have shed a new light on the role of pro...

In the world-wide cardiovascular diseases are the most common. And mortallities are high. Many modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases have been identified. One of them is diets. In diet polyunsaturated fatty acids such omega-3 and omega-6 have protective effects on cardiovascular health. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are essentials for humans, have taken from foods...
متن کاملRelationships of Dietary Patterns, Foods, and Micro- and Macronutrients with Alzheimer's Disease and Late-Life Cognitive Disorders: A Systematic Review.
In the last decade, the association between diet and cognitive function or dementia has been largely investigated. In the present article, we systematically reviewed observational studies published in the last three years (2014-2016) on the relationship among dietary factors and late-life cognitive disorders at different levels of investigation (i.e., dietary patterns, foods and food-groups, an...

The type of diet consumed by individuals has been associated with the development of some chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, diabetes, and others. Populations that consume diets rich in fruits and vegetables and drink wine in moderation, as the Mediterranean, have a higher life expectancy and less chronic diseases than other occidental populations. We carried out ...
